8 great dad songs that just hit you in the feels
There’s a lot of great songs that were always good, but then they just hit differently when you become a father.
There are a lot of great songs that musicians have recorded over the years that are dedicated to their children. We took a shot at putting together the best playlist for dads. Whether you’re welcoming your first child, have a few older kids or somewhere in between, these six songs just seem to really hit home.
“Good Ol’ Man” by Drew Green
Released in 2022 by new father Drew Green, the song was an instant hit. Green said about the song, “This is my son’s and my song, and I hope people get that feeling when they hear it. It’s about being a good family man,” according to The Country Note.
“Next Thing You Know” by Jordan Davis
“Next Thing You Know” takes us on the full journey of fatherhood. From meeting the mom to having his first child to watching the kids grow up and having their own kids. The song was nominated for the 2023 CMA Awards for Single, Song and Video of the year.
“Boy” by Lee Brice
Lee Brice’s 2017 hit song, “Boy” really connects with fathers as they think about their own times growing up as they look upon their young sons. Brice told The Boot that part of the reason he chose to release it as a single is because when he performed it live, fans would hold up pictures of their sons.
“Backseat Driver” by Kane Brown
Just released in late 2024, the hit song “Backseat Driver” highlights how we can appreciate the innocence and curiosity of our children as he drives around with his daughter. In the music video Kane Brown shows actual clips of him with his two daughters.
“Just The Two Of US” by Will Smith
Released as a single in 1998 as part of “Big Willie Style,” “Just The Two Of Us” was a new take on another song with the same title. However, as the original song was about a couple in love, Will Smith updated the lyrics to be about a father and his son.
“You’re Gonna Miss This” by Trace Adkins
While “You’re Gonna Miss This” isn’t exactly a father speaking to his daughter, it sure resonates with all dads. Released in 2008, the lyrics are directed at a young woman who can’t wait to grow up. And instead of always looking for the next thing in life, enjoying what she has because… she’ll miss it. Written by Ashley Gorley and Lee Thomas Miller, the song resonated with Trace Adkins who is a father of 5 daughters himself.
“Humble and Kind”by Tim McGraw
Written by Lori McKenna, “Humble and Kind” is a song that really hits home when thinking about raising your children. The chorus line says it all. “Hold the door, say please, say thank you. Don’t steal, don’t cheat, and don’t lie. I know you got mountains to climb, but always stay humble and kind.” Released in 2016, it speaks to the values we try to teach and want to our kids to embody.
“It Won’t Be Like This For Long” by Darius Rucker
Released in 2008, “It Won’t Be Like This For Long” takes us on the journey from new parents of a daughter and the long nights that come with that all the way till “that little girl is all grown up and gone.” Like other songs we’ve highlighted, it’s about enjoying the the time we have with them because it goes by so fast.
