More schools are banning Crocs as their popularity soars

As many parents will confirm, Crocs are their kids’ favorite shoes. And it’s not just children. Crocs are popular with adults, with several celebrities posting images to social media of themselves wearing the popular footwear (though some are making a commission on the sales they generate).

Adding shoe charms or “Jibbitz” to your crocs has also become very popular, with kids even trading them like pins or Pokemon cards.

However the debate has been ongoing for some time about the practicality of the “shoes,” and how safe they are for children to wear in school.

At Bessemer City High School in Alabama, in addition to a ban on hoodies, Crocs are also not allowed.

As WBRC reports, Principal Stoney Pritchett considers it a safety issue and commented on their impediment to fire drills, tornado drills and other situations where students need to move quickly. “We want to make sure that kids are safe moving throughout the building. Other things happen as well that the school can’t prevent. We just want to make sure that no one breaks their leg or their ankle because the school is liable, and we want to make sure everyone is safe,” Pritchett told the news outlet.

However, Alabama isn’t the only state that has school districts banning the footwear. According to Today, “dozens of schools in at least 20 states are explicitly banning Crocs in their dress codes.”

Podiatrists generally agree that crocs are most problematic if you’re running or playing sports in them. As Optimum Podiatry states about wearing Crocs, “you’re increasing your risk for slips, trips, and ankle rolls. And that could translate to ankle sprains, fractures, and other kinds of sports injuries.

As parents however, it’s up to us to decide what’s best for our children. If they love Crocs, it’s fairly safe to let them wear them, just not for extended periods of time and not during physical activity.
