Apparently, being able to stand on one foot at a time while putting your shoes on can indicate whether you’r an old man or not. Well, at least according to social media.

The ‘old man test’ went viral on TikTok, and has since been replicated across various social platforms.

So here’s the test.

First, put your shoes and socks on the ground near you. Next, while balancing on one leg, pick up and put on your sock, then your shoe and tie it. Then put your now shoed foot down and repeat with the other foot.

According to the New York Post, The ‘old man test’ was created by fitness trainer Chris Hinshaw. The viral video that has over 158,000 likes shows Hinshaw challenging bodybuilder Nsima Inyang to do the test.

Also, according to multiple health resources, your ability to balance on one leg is a good indicator of how well you are aging. This article from the AARP breaks out multiple studies like the one from Duke Health that breaks average one leg standing time by age. It states that your balance begins to decline in midlife starting in your 30’s and 40’s, then continues into your 50’s and so on.

So perhaps there is something more to the ‘old man test’ than just a viral social media challenge. Either way, it’s a good indication of balance, strength and eye-hand coordination.
